Erik ten Hag confirms Jonny Evans to be offered Manchester United contract

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has disclosed that the club is engaged in discussions with Jonny Evans regarding a new contract, which might result in the defender remaining with the team for the 2023-24 season.

Following his departure from Leicester City at the conclusion of June, the Northern Ireland international commenced pre-season training at Manchester United. He subsequently penned a short-term agreement with the Red Devils, enabling his participation in friendlies against Lyon and Wrexham.

Subsequent to the Wrexham match in the United States, the 35-year-old was retained. He featured against Borussia Dortmund in the final encounter of the club’s pre-season tour and then participated against Athletic Bilbao in the team’s concluding friendly of the summer.

With Harry Maguire now poised to remain at Manchester United, being one of four senior centre-backs alongside Lisandro Martinez, Raphael Varane, and Victor Lindelof, the focus has shifted to Evans. There have been indications that he could secure a contract extension until the following June.

Ten Hag expressed his intention to retain the seasoned defender at Old Trafford.

“In response to the last question, no. No, it doesn’t impact that (Maguire’s situation). We’ll see. We’re in discussions and when we have updates, we’ll share that as always,” the manager affirmed during his press conference ahead of the clash with Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday.

“At this moment, [he’s] not [under contract]. I have to say, it’s a brief [deal] for [last] month [July], he’s under contract. But we are discussing.”

Upon being asked whether he desires Evans to remain, Ten Hag responded,

“Yes. Otherwise, we wouldn’t be in talks.”

Evans, who has accrued 102 caps for Northern Ireland, progressed through Manchester United’s youth system before making his debut for the first team in 2006.

During his tenure, he amassed 198 appearances for the Red Devils, securing three Premier League titles, two League Cups, four Community Shields, and the Club World Cup.

Subsequently, Evans represented West Bromwich Albion for three years prior to joining Leicester. Over the course of 152 appearances for the Foxes, he triumphed in the FA Cup.

In the last season, the defender encountered fitness challenges, limiting his involvement to just 13 Premier League appearances.

Evans has reportedly left a significant imprint on Ten Hag and his coaching staff during his time at the club. His leadership and experience have positioned him as a potential noteworthy addition.
