Erik ten Hag ready to 'strike' in transfer market if there is opportunity

Erik ten Hag, the manager of Manchester United, has affirmed that his squad is “covered,” yet he has not dismissed the possibility of additional new signings joining before the transfer window concludes.

During the current summer, the Red Devils have secured the acquisitions of Mason Mount, Andre Onana, and Rasmus Hojlund at Old Trafford. Concurrently, negotiations are underway with Jonny Evans, a free agent, regarding a potential agreement.

Even as the 20-time English champions persistently remain linked with Fiorentina’s Sofyan Amrabat, Ten Hag is believed to possess a resolute determination to secure a defensive midfielder before the September cut-off.

Nevertheless, Man United’s pursuit of Amrabat has yet to materialize in a formal offer, as the club seemingly requires further sales before reinforcing their squad further.

In advance of the forthcoming Premier League face-off with Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday, Ten Hag underlined his contentment with the current squad, while also highlighting the readiness of the club to seize suitable opportunities in the transfer market.

“Our squad is covered. All positions are covered. Yet, of course, being Manchester United, we are perpetually in pursuit of advancement. Should an opportune moment arise, we are poised to act within the final two weeks.”

He further elucidated,

“We are consistently on the lookout for prospects. However, I am of the opinion that our current squad is robust, and we are confident that, with this assembly, we can effectively pursue our objectives.”

The commencement of the 2023-24 Premier League campaign saw Manchester United triumph with a 1-0 victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers, marked by a solitary goal from Raphael Varane.

Looking ahead, the 20-time English champions are en route to North London, seeking to maintain a consecutive win streak as they embark on a new season facing Tottenham.

Ten Hag also engaged with queries concerning the club’s statement regarding Mason Greenwood, which disclosed the finalization of an inquiry into the events leading to his arrest in January 2022.

Though Man United is preparing to unveil an announcement regarding Greenwood’s future, Ten Hag was disinclined to delve into the subject during his press conference.

He expressed,

“We channel our focus towards our style of play and the collective performance of the team. The emphasis is on the players available to us. Our immediate focus is directed towards Tottenham Hotspur.”

Acknowledging the challenges of a season’s outset, Ten Hag commented,

“Initiating each season comes with its share of difficulties. We acknowledge this reality. Our awareness is acute, as seen from the outset against Wolves. While our performance may not have met expectations, our resolve was evident, underscoring character and personality, facets we aimed to enhance based on the previous season.”

Despite an ankle ailment compelling Lisandro Martinez’s halftime exit during Monday’s game against Wolves at Old Trafford, the defender is poised to be available for the forthcoming clash against Tottenham.
