In tonight’s game against San Marino, which England won 6-0. Rooney opened the scoring with the goal that sets him level with Sir Bobby Charlton’s epic England goal scoring record.
England have qualified for the 2016 Euros first out of all other competing teams, and have done it in record time, with 3 games to spare.
Rooney scored the first goal of the Euro Qualifiers match up with a powerful penalty. On the 58th minute he was subbed off for Harry Kane, who went on to score in the 77th minute.
The Manchester United striker has equalled Sir Bobby Charlton’s record of 49 goals in the same amount of appearances (106) and the same number of years.
Charlton’s record was forged between 1958 and 1970, and Rooney’s been chasing it down since 2003.
There are some distinct differences between the Red Devil legends such as Charlton predominantly playing as an attacking midfielder and Rooney playing his whole career up front.
Another is that Rooney isn’t playing in a World Cup winning side like Sir Bobby was. Rooney has been in a disappointing and rebuilding England team set up.
There are of course many other difference between the two players but, both records are immensely impressive and both will be remembered as England legends.
England play Switzerland at Wembley on Tuesday and the stage looks set for Wayne Rooney to become England’s all time top goal scorer in front of his home fans.
