Darren Fletcher has given the Manchester United midfield a massive boost this summer by declaring that he will be back and ready for first-team football not long after the new season starts against Swansea in August.
Fletcher was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis back in 2011, in which he made a great recovery from the disease to play for Manchester United again before Fletcher, doctors and the club decided that it was best for him to go under the knife to help his condition and withdraw him from the rest of United’s season.
Fletcher has been doing light running and gym work with the reserves at Carrington over the past few months and cannot wait to get back in action for United.
Speaking to the BBC sport, Fletcher said:
“I’ve had it for five years but really struggled to control it for the last three years. It’s had a big impact on my day-to-day life, never mind trying to play football.
“Medication wasn’t helping me but surgery was the only solution if I wanted to have not only a future playing football but even a quality of life going forward.
“It’s all going well. I am still under the hands of the medical team just now and the surgeon who is looking after me. Everything is going to plan so far and I am not that far away now.
“I am doing exercise on my own. I’ve not been given the green light to join in contact in football training but I am doing my own running and physical activities and feel great.
“Hopefully, in the next few weeks I am going to get the green light to join in and to start making the comeback, which is looking very good.”

great then we can have the same midfield that got hammered 1-6 by city at home……..and his return will be the excuse for no summer signings.
Hope you are back playing soon daz man u need you true gent god made the scots no 1
If he can get back to level he was at before then that would be like a new signing and a damn good one at that, a fit Darren Fletcher first the top of his game is one of the best midfielders in Europe for me, and I really hope he makes it back
Im sure josh Lucy had the same problem and managed to make a come back after surgery and was playing regularly
