Amorim’s Concern for Martínez That Could See Him Out For The Season

Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has called for collective support for Lisandro Martínez after the defender suffered a worrying injury during Sunday’s 2-0 Premier League defeat to Crystal Palace at Old Trafford. The Argentine centre-back, who had been in outstanding form and was a strong contender for the club’s Player of the Month award in January, was forced off on a stretcher after twisting awkwardly during a challenge with Ismaila Sarr in the second half.

Martínez immediately signalled to the bench that he needed to be substituted, visibly in pain and distraught as he was carried off the pitch. The injury has raised concerns about the severity of the issue, with Amorim describing it as a “serious situation” in his post-match comments.

Amorim’s Concern for Martínez

Speaking to the media after the match, Amorim expressed his sympathy for the defender and emphasised the importance of rallying around him during what could be a challenging recovery period.

“I think it is a serious situation,” Amorim said. “A bad situation for us and especially for Licha. We are going to see in the next few days, but I think it is a serious situation. It’s really hard on us—he’s not just a great player but a strong character in the dressing room. Especially in this moment, it’s hard for us.”

Amorim highlighted Martínez’s importance to the team, both on and off the pitch, and stressed the need for unity during this difficult time. “Now it is time for all of us to help Licha. He felt it, and when you are a player, you know when it is serious. Let’s hope for better days for him. We are here, like I say, to help him in this difficult moment.”

The United boss also confirmed that the club will await a full assessment from the medical team before determining the extent of the injury. However, the early signs suggest that Martínez could face a significant spell on the sidelines, which would be a major blow for a team already struggling for consistency this season.

A Potential Defensive Crisis

Martínez’s injury comes at a particularly challenging time for United, who have been plagued by defensive issues throughout the campaign. The Argentine’s leadership, tenacity, and technical ability have made him a cornerstone of Amorim’s backline, and his absence would leave a significant void in the team’s defensive structure.

In a bid to bolster their defensive options, United confirmed the signings of two defenders over the weekend: 20-year-old wing-back Patrick Dorgu from Lecce and 18-year-old centre-back Ayden Heaven from Arsenal. While these additions provide depth, neither player is likely to be an immediate replacement for Martínez, whose experience and quality are irreplaceable.

Looking Ahead to the FA Cup

United’s next match sees them host Leicester City in the fourth round of the Emirates FA Cup on Friday night. The tie will pit Amorim against former United striker Ruud van Nistelrooy, who is now managing the Foxes. It presents an opportunity for the Red Devils to bounce back from their disappointing league form and keep their hopes of silverware alive this season.

However, the potential loss of Martínez could complicate matters for Amorim, who will need to find a way to reorganise his defence ahead of the clash. The likes of Harry Maguire, Victor Lindelöf, and new signing Ayden Heaven may be called upon to step up in Martínez’s absence, but the Argentine’s influence will be sorely missed.

A Test of Resilience

Martínez’s injury is the latest setback in what has been a turbulent season for Manchester United. The team’s struggles at Old Trafford, where they have now lost five of their last seven Premier League matches, have raised questions about Amorim’s ability to turn things around.

For Amorim, the challenge now is to rally his squad and find a way to cope without one of their most influential players. The Portuguese manager has repeatedly spoken about the need for patience and unity as he implements his tactical philosophy, but the pressure is mounting for results to improve.

As the club awaits further updates on Martínez’s condition, the focus will shift to Friday’s FA Cup clash. A strong performance against Leicester could provide a much-needed boost, but without Martínez, United’s task becomes even more daunting.

In the meantime, the message from Amorim is clear: the entire club must come together to support Martínez during his recovery. For a player who has given so much to the team, it is now time for his teammates, coaches, and fans to return the favour.
