Fabrizio Romano reports United in for Odisseas Vlachodimos

Manchester United are said to be keen on acquiring Benfica’s shot-stopper, Odisseas Vlachodimos.

As David de Gea exits Old Trafford and Dean Henderson’s future remains clouded with transfer rumours, Erik ten Hag finds himself deliberating over his goalkeeping department this transfer window.

Even with the recent high-profile signing of Inter Milan’s Andre Onana, there’s still debate over who might serve as the second-choice keeper.

While Henderson has featured on the bench in United’s initial Premier League matches, teams such as Nottingham Forest and Crystal Palace have shown interest in the English keeper.

Given United’s tight constraints with Financial Fair Play and their ambition to sign more talent, offloading Henderson for a more economical alternative seems a strategic move.

Henderson, who naturally desires regular first-team action over a reserve spot at United, might see alterations in Ten Hag’s team setup soon.

Leading transfer analyst, Fabrizio Romano, hints that United might be contemplating a move for Benfica’s Vlachodimos.

The 29-year-old goalkeeper stands as one of Benfica’s mainstays, having amassed 225 appearances since joining in 2018.

Vlachodimos played a pivotal role in Benfica’s Primeira Liga victory in the 2022-23 season and further showcased his talent during their Champions League journey to the quarter-finals.

Holding a contract till 2027 and with Benfica in no immediate need to offload key players, the Greek international is in a strong position. Still, Romano believes that Vlachodimos tops United’s list for the backup role to Onana.

However, questions arise on whether Vlachodimos would accept a secondary role, especially observing Ten Hag’s limited rotation of De Gea and his deputies in the previous hectic season.

In parallel, Benfica might demand a sum close to United’s appraisal of Henderson, considering Vlachodimos’ pivotal role at Estadio da Luz.
