In a Manchester United press conference, the manager left reporters and fans wondering who will the Reds will sign next. When questioned which striker United are getting, the Dutchman responded:
“Not the striker that the media has written”
and that we’ll have to:
“wait and see”
Unless he’s pulling a sneaky trick, this statement should rule out the likes of: Edinson Cavani; Harry Kane; Karim Benzema; Thomas Muller; Robert Lewandowski and; Zlatan Ibrahimovic.
Van Gaal has also said that Wayne Rooney will be their top striker next season, the striker has claimed to be targeting 20 Premier League goals next season. If United are going to use the same formation as they did in the Club America friendly (4-2-3-1 / 4-2-1-3); then the new striker will either be: more of a center forward who will play behind Rooney; an all out striker, with Rooney playing just behind, or; he’ll need the ability to play on the wing beside Rooney.
So who could United be after? The 5 below are five top players, who haven’t been heavily linked with a move to Old Trafford yet this summer.
The Frenchman has fantastic pace and dribbling ability, accompanied by a a deadly shot. Lacazette socred 27 goals and 8 assists in 33 league appearances for Olympique Lyonnais last season. The 24 year old collected the Ligue 1 Top Goalscorer and Player of the Year awards, along with being in they team of the year for the second consecutive season. He spent the majority of last season as one of two strikers in the Lyon formation.
One of the fastest players in top league football. The Gabon international captain can, and does, play as either a striker or a right winger. The majority of his goals come when he plays as a striker but he can still score when set out wide. He scored 25 and set up 11 goals in a rather disappointing season for his club, Borussia Dortmund.
At only 22 year old, he finished as Serie A Top-Scorer last season, with 22 goals. Icardi is a very physical striker with a very powerful shot. The Argentinian would play next to another striker when lining up for Inter with an attacking midfielder behind them.
Luuk De Jong
The Dutch striker helped PSV Eindhoven to their first Eredivise title in 7 years. De Jong scored 20 league goals, only to be outscored at PSV by United’s own Memphis Depay. The 24 year old also wrapped up 12 league assists, twice as many as Depay. De Jong would play as a central striker with a winger either side of him.
Berahino had a great season with West Brom, despite their turbulent start. He played all 38 Premier League games last season, scoring 14 goals and getting an assist. The 21 year old played all across West Brom’s attack: striker; center forward; left wing and right wing, he’s a truly diverse goal scorer.
