How has David Moyes fared during his time at Real Sociedad compared to Manchester United?

Just over a year ago, David Moyes was dismissed as manager of Manchester United after a disappointing campaign that saw the club drop as low as seventh in the Premier League table. A lot has changed at Old Trafford since then as Louis van Gaal has led the team to a number of victories, and the Red Devils currently sit in the top four with just three matches remaining. It’s not all been rosy at United though, they have lost their last three Premier League games, including a 1-0 defeat at home to West Brom in their last outing.

However, a lot has changed for Moyes too. The Scot now manages La Liga side Real Sociedad and has had an encouraging campaign so far. The 52-year-old took charge with the club languishing in the relegation zone, but Moyes has helped them climb up the Spanish league table and they now sit in eleventh – a respectable finish.

Moyes has been in the Spanish media at various times throughout the season, however, unlike his time at United, he has been animated and often appears to be having a good time. Earlier in his campaign, he was dismissed from the touchline after gesturing what appeared to be a pair of glasses at the linesman. The 52-year-old then ran into the stands, climbed up a few rows and sat with the fans. Amazingly, the Scot’s presence was well received and he even ate a few crisps with some of the locals!

On the field, Sociedad’s results have picked up too. They have lost just two of their last 10 La Liga matches and have beaten Barcelona during Moyes’ tenure at the club. More recently, he picked up an impressive draw against high-flying Valencia, while Sociedad also avoided defeat in Moyes’ first Basque derby against Athletic Bilbao. With three matches still to play, Sociedad sit just five points behind their main rivals who sit in seventh place. It would take some effort but Moyes’ side could still finish as high as seventh, provided that results elsewhere went their way.

Overall, Moyes appears to be enjoying his life in Spain and although United fans will always regret his time at the club, most would probably be glad to know that he’s doing well in La Liga. Sociedad are never going to challenge the likes of Barcelona and Real Madrid across a 38 game season, but the 52-year-old has at least had the experience of taking on Europe’s major players and showing that, unlike his time in the Premier League, he can at least lead a side to be competitive against some of the world’s best clubs.
