Louis Van Gaal ‘reveals’ United transfer plans?!

Louis Van Gaal recently ‘revealed’ Manchester United’s transfer targets for this summer, which included Southampton’s Nathaniel Clyne, Juventus midfielder Paul Pogba and PSV’s Memphis Depay – who featured under the Dutchman at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. Unfortunately for supporters, this was not a real list and was produced by a fan and given to Van Gaal at the Manchester United Foundation Dream Day earlier this week

The 63-year-old spent the majority of the day at the event, along with some high-profile United players including captain Wayne Rooney. The day aims to provide terminally ill supporters with the opportunity to meet their heroes in the flesh. Van Gaal spoke to various people throughout the day, but one fan was particularly eager to meet the Dutchman and presented him with a list of potential transfer targets – which would cost the club in excess of £300 million.

The fan handed the Dutchman a piece of paper, and added: “I did some homework for you and brought you a transfer list.”

The United boss played along and informed the room, as well as United’s personal channel, of the supporters transfer targets as he revealed: “Hummels, Clyne, Pogba, Bale, Depay and Jackson Martinez… thank you for your advice, you are smart and a very cheap manager!”

Van Gaal will be happy to receive some positive media attention after some icy press conferences and interviews in recent weeks. He was clearly annoyed after the 1-0 defeat to Chelsea but reporters took his comments out of context. The United boss struggles with the media at the best of times but after an undeserved defeat, he was always likely to be a little tetchy.

For example, the Dutchman struggled with the media earlier in the season when United were going through a rough patch. After both Manchester City and Chelsea were knocked out of the FA Cup third round, Van Gaal revealed that although he believed that the Red Devils were one of the favourites to win the competition, he would not be betting on the tournament because he is not allowed. He said: “People are maybe betting on us. I’m not allowed… I’m not a casino man.” However, there are a number of managers and footballers that do enjoy playing casino games, with Lionel Messi and Cesc Fabregas spotted in Manchester casino prior to Barcelona’s Champions League clash with Manchester City.

Although United’s slim hopes of the title have now all but finished, the Red Devils must continue to win matches and secure a place in the top four and bring Champions League football back to Old Trafford next season.
