Former Manchester United right-back Gary Neville recently spoke with TalkSport, in which listener Richard Smith asked, “Should Van Gaal be sacked if United finish outside the top 4?”
Gary Neville replied with:
“He has to get into the Champions League. But on the other hand, if he didn’t, then no absolutely not!”
“You can’t sack a manager one year, then sack another the year after. Where do you go from there?
“There has to be some form of continuity, and I absolutely believe there will be some form of continuity this time for United.
“I do [think they’ll finish top 4]. At the start of the season I thought 3rd, but there’s a period in March when they’ve got Arsenal in the FA Cup quarter-final, Spurs the Sunday after, Liverpool the Sunday after that, and after the international break they have to play Chelsea and City. That will be a big period, but United and Van Gaal started the season poorly until all these big games came along and they actually started to fight.
“Those big games will inspire players, they know they need to step up the performances there’s no doubt about that. They’ve been getting decent results, it’s not a bad period with 2 defeats in 20 games; however, they need to perform.”
