United look to Brazilian right back as long-term replacement for Rafael

According to reports in Marca Manchester United are one of a number of clubs interested in signing Danilo Luiz da Silva from FC Porto. The Brazilian international right-back has drawn interest from some of the world’s elite teams with PSG, Barcelona and Real Madrid all reportedly interested.

The Brazilian has impressed since joining the club from Santos in January 2012, having starred for Porto in both the league and Champions league.

Louis Van Gaal has had difficulty finding a balance at right back this season. Rafael’s journey back from injury has been a long one and when the Brazilian has been contention for the starting XI he has been a long way from his best form. Whilst the 24 year old’s attacking contribution is always fantastic, this does not make up for his shortcomings at the back. Instead LVG has looked to Antonio Valencia to fill the void. United fans have had contrasting views over his performances; some fans see him as nothing more than a squad player, whilst others have been full of praise for the Ecuadorian. One thing is certain ‘right back’ is not a natural role for Valencia and it’s likely he is going to make some mistakes.

Whilst there is speculation over Rafael’s long term future with Manchester United, there is always a chance that that the club could be interested in Danilo as a replacement. The only concern would be whether the Brazilian can deal with the pace of the Premier League, which is a contrast to the tempo and style of play in Brazil and Portugal and you would feel given the choice he could opt for Spain over England.

Danilo converted a 79th minute penalty to clinch a vital away goal for Porto in the UEFA Champions League last 16 tie with Basel on Wednesday night. If the Brazilian continues to impress for his club in the tournament he is sure to find himself at a big club next season.

Enjoy that? Give it a share!
