Manchester United target Europa League glory

Manchester United have already clinched the League Cup title, but Jose Mourinho is hungry for more success. The Red Devils are regarded as one of the main favourites to win the Europa League trophy, but they will have to prove their worth on the field. For this Europa League special we collaborated with Ivan Hierro, Europa League expert at FootballPredictions.com

Manchester United have been struggling in the Premier League ever since Sir Alex Fergusson left the club. The Red Devils experienced all sorts of problems under David Moyes and many people expected that Louis van Gaal would help the English giants bring glory days back to Old Trafford. The Dutch tactician won the FA Cup trophy with Man Utd, but his men failed to impress in the 2015/2016 Premier League campaign and, as a result, Jose Mourinho took over the reins.

The club chiefs did well to reinforce the squad in the summer transfer window, but “The Special One” doesn’t have a magic wand in his pocket and it is more than obvious that he needs time to turn things around at Old Trafford. Manchester United did well to beat Southampton in the League Cup final earlier this season, but Chelsea proved to be a big catch for the Red Devils in the FA Cup quarter-finals. Jose Mourinho’s men are still playing on two fronts and, no doubt, they have a chance of booking their place in the Champions League.

Manchester United will make it to the elite competition by finishing the Premier League season in top four, but that is easier said than done. The Old Trafford outfit occupy sixth place in the standings ahead of Matchday 32 and they are four points behind fourth-placed Manchester City. However, seeing that winning the Europa League guarantees a place in the Champions League group stages, the Red Devils will have yet another chance to meet the goal.

Despite suffering two defeats in the Europa League group stages, Jose Mourinho’s team eventually make it to the last 32 of the European competition. The Premier League club rolled over Saint-Etienne in the two-legged tie and thanks to the triumph over the Ligue 1 outfit they set up a meeting with Rostov in the Europa League last 16. Thanks to Juan Mata’s goal in the return leg at the “Theatre of Dreams” the Red Devils advanced to the quarter-finals and they are regarded as favourites to beat Anderlecht in the upcoming two-legged tie. Premier League sides did not take Europa League very seriously in the past, but considering that now they can qualify for the Champions League by winning the competition, I am positive that Manchester United footballers will leave their hearts on the field in the tie against Anderlecht.

The likes of Roma, Borussia M’gladbach and Olympiakos have already suffered elimination in the knockout stages of the Europa League and it is no surprise Manchester United are seen as No. 1 favourites to win the trophy. Taking everything into account, given the experience Jose Mourinho has gained by coaching the likes of Porto, Inter, Chelsea and Real Madrid, I believe that the Red Devils have good chances of winning the Europa League title.
