Manchester United’s most expensive, and most shocking, signing of the summer Anthony Martial has informed Louis van Gaal of his preferred position.
For A.S. Monaco, Martial scored 15 goals in 70 appearances, being a substitute in the majority of those appearances. He only averaged 54 minutes a game but is a very young player, so the majority of his appearances being as a substitute is understandable.
Last season the young Frenchman scored in 4 consecutive games, totalling 5 goals.
Speaking to FFF, Anthony said:
“Van Gaal asked me my preferred position. I prefer to play in the centre. He told me I could play in a number of positions”
Of Martial’s 15 goals, 13 of them came as a central striker. The other 2 were as a substitute winger.
This is not good news for United fans that were glad to see a striker come to Old Trafford. It looks likely that the Dutch coach will be playing another member of his team away from their optimum position.
It also adds more bad news for Rooney’s goal drought as he plays far better when beside a true striker like Anthony Martial.
Having Rooney beside him would really help him in the Premier League and with his development. Being played out of position, and needing to learn a new role would not be good for him at such a crucial stage in his career.
If played in his position as a striker, consistently, he has the potential to become one of the best in the world. Being played out wide would only hinder his development, and leave United with only 2 strikers. One is being played out of position, and the other is very far from being first team material.
