Manchester United Top The Television Income Charts
Yesterday, the Barclays Premier League revealed that Manchester United PLC received a record broadcast payment of £60.8million, for coverage over their 38 games during the 2012-13 season.
£60.8million was tracked as being earned by United while the lowest was relegated Queens Park Rangers, which only received £39.8million over the season.
The Founder Members’ Agreement of the Premier League rules that 50% of UK broadcast revenue is split equally between the 20 clubs, 25% is paid in merit payments, and the final 25% is paid in facility fees each time a club’s matches are broadcast in the UK.
All international broadcast revenue is split equally amongst the 20 clubs.
Surprisingly, both Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur earned more than Chelsea who were European Champions.
However, next seasonbroadcast income will rocket, with the Barclays Premier League set to generate a total of about £5.5billion in global rights revenues for the next three seasons. The champion next season can expect to earn nearly £100million, while the bottom club can expect to earn about £63 million.
Let’s hope that some of the money generated by Manchester United goes into repaying the debt still hanging over the club or even bring ticket costs down for fans.
