René Meulensteen admits Sir Alex Ferguson is relieved to retire

Manchester United coach René Meulensteen was interviewed this morning as he left Carrington Training Complex to join up with the players as they enjoy a day at Chester races.

During the interview Meulensteen admitted that the players and staff only found out this morning (Wednesday) that Sir Alex Ferguson had indeed decided to call it a day as manager of Manchester United.

Speaking with Sky Sports News, Rene said:

“Just this morning [when they found out], just this morning when I came to the club, he called us into his office, and he said what decision he took.

Well it’s always been on the cards, and speculation every season now and I think the manager kept his cards close to his chest and I think he’s felt the time is right now and he’s made that decision.

Well he’s obviously a man who thinks things through very, very well, so I’m sure he’s taken a lot of thought into making this decision and I wish him all the well, he’s been absolutely fantastic for this club, for Manchester United and I hope to making sure that all the fans give whoever is going to come in the same support that he gets.

“Well I think we’ve responded really well to the big disappointment we had last year, I think there was a determination around the whole place, especially around the manager and I think he’s been delighted that we won the title the way that we did.

“I think his [Ferguson’s] mood today is a combination of relief in some ways, you know.”
