Wayne Rooney has insisted that Manchester United must not think about winning the Barclays Premier League title until at least the last few games of the season despite being nine-points clear.
Manchester United are currently nine-points ahead of Manchester City and a massive sixteen-points ahead of Chelsea who are in third.
United were eight-points clear last term before losing the league on the final day of the season on goal difference, but Rooney has no intention of falling into that trap once again:
Ahead of the visit of his former club Everton this weekends he spoke to the clubs website and is in not taking anything for granted at this stage of the season.
He said:
“Results are the most important thing now, look at Manchester City against QPR. They should have got the win, had a lot of chances but ended up dropping two points.
“That could quite easily have happened to us against Southampton the following night. It proves we have to keep picking up the points when we can. Once it comes down to the last four or five games, then we will see what position we are in and work out what we have to do.”
The Real Madrid game is the one that everyone is talking about, but the squad need to concentrate on getting the job done against Everton this Sunday, everyone is working hard at the club and Rooney explains that you cannot hide from technology, he added:
“We don’t have anyone who doesn’t want to do the work, we all look at the statistics after the game to see how much running we have done and are well aware of everything we do.
“There is no hiding place with all the technology and stuff.”
Last season United let the lead go against Everton which ended 4-4 and losing two-points that would of won the reds the league, this term more often than not they have been going behind and Rooney cannot see why.
He added:
“I can’t put my finger on why we are not killing teams off
“We have scored plenty of goals. It is the most number we have scored at this stage of the season. We have conceded too many and have done throughout the season, but that is the way we have been set up to play. We have to just keep our scoring going.”
