Manchester United’s David De Gea admits that being a goalkeeper in one of the worlds biggest clubs is more intense than any other club.
A challenge in which he relishes and hopes to continue top form in the future.
Since moving to Manchester United from Atetico Madrid back in 2011, De Gea has made 51 appearances for the club and in that time has impressed to secure the number-one position over Anders Lindegaard.
De Gea admits that he enjoys the competition with Lindegaard regarding the number-one spot at the club.
Sir Alex Ferguson has been using both on a rotation system so far over the 20-games played this season, seemingly David De Gea is usually between the sticks for the bigger games for Manchester United.
De Gea has given a fantastic interview with club magazine United Review and admits the following:
“I’m at a huge club and there are big demands on you, as a goalkeeper I’m well aware that any mistake can be magnified by the press and the fans. That’s always the case for goalkeepers, no matter where you play.”
“But it’s true that here at Manchester United there’s added pressure. It’s bigger than it was for me at Atletico Madrid and also for the Spain Under-21 team. It’s a challenge that’s enjoyable and it ensures you’re always striving to operate at 100 per cent.”
An amazing stat so far this season is that Manchester United have conceded the first goal in 13 matches out of 20, having to come behind to win in 8 of those matches. In the Barclay’s Premier League you have to go back to the start of October to find our last clean sheet, against Newcastle United at St James’ Park.
De Gea himself admits that he loves being apart of a club that has so much self-belief.
“I have been surprised. Certainly, when I was in Spain I’d heard about this aspect and seen for myself on TV the way the team always seemed to conjure up a late goal to either draw or win matches. So it’s great to be a part of it myself.
“I think dramatic comebacks are part of the heart and soul of this club and it’s almost written in the history of Manchester United that these sorts of things happen so often. I love being a part of it and experiencing it for myself.”
