Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho was less-than impressed with his team for the amount of mistakes made during Sunday’s 3-2 defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion. United shipped three first half goals on the South Coast, and a late Paul Pogba penalty was only a consolation after a poor performance.
United’s manager, speaking to Sky Sports in quotes carried by Manutd.com was deeply disappointed with the manner of the loss:
“We made too many mistakes and we were punished by the mistakes. We were punished by every mistake we made and I think the third goal is too hard for the team [to come back]. We tried at half-time and the team tried in the second half, but I think from the mental point of view the accumulation of the mistakes and the punishing of those mistakes with goals step by step was giving happiness and confidence to a good team like Brighton.
“They took that confidence from us. Sometimes you make mistakes and you are not punished, sometimes the opponent doesn’t take advantage of your gifts, doesn’t take advantage of the mistakes you make. Sometimes they do it and this time it was almost three from three, so they were clinical with the gifts we gave them and, because of that, I think they deserve it.”
After Manchester City’s 6-1 thrashing of Huddersfield Town, United’s loss looks even worse, given that the club should have aspirations of pushing Pep Guardiola’s side for the Premier League title this season. A fixture at home to Tottenham Hotspur next Monday will be a big test for the Portuguese’s side, after a stuttering start to this new season has seen them leak four goals in two games. Mauricio Pochettino’s side have started the season with two wins, and United surely cannot contemplate another defeat this early on in the campaign.
