Marouane Fellaini has announced to his manager, Louis van Gaal, that he’s not a striker, and that to get the best out of him, he needs to be played in a deeper role.
Fellaini is unfortunately seen as a poor reminder of David Moyes’ tragic season in 2013/14. He was brought in for an extortionate fee of £27.5 million and, so far, hasn’t done anything to warrant that price tag.
Despite having played under David Moyes for 5 years, the Scottish manager played Fellaini in many varying positions and the Belgian looked clumsy and out of place in each of them.
Last season, he managed to score a few goals, and looked to have improved, but this was most likely due to the hectic formation finding and, because so few players actually played to a typical Manchester United standard.
Now Louis van Gaal is using the big Belgian as a make-shift backup striker. Marouane has spoken about his positional bias. Reconfirming his commitment to the team, Fellaini has stated where he plays best:
“When the manager asks me to play somewhere, I play there. But my best position is midfield.”
Fellaini’s statement, that he plays best in midfield, is fine, it most likely is his best position, especially if he prefers it. However, if he actually wants to play some football in his favoured position, then he should probably hand in a transfer request.
It would take a horrific plague to make a midfield spot available for Fellaini.
Manchester United has the Premier League’s best central midfield roster. No other team’s central midfield options are as world class as the combination of: Bastian Schweinsteiger, Morgan Schneiderlin, Ander Herrera and, Michael Carrick.
