Manchester United faces Club Brugge tonight in the second leg of the Champions League Qualifier. In the last leg, Marouane Fellaini came on as a sub and scored a last second header to give United a 3-1 victory.
He looks set to play tonight, behind Wayne Rooney. The Belgian lacks match fitness as he’s been serving a 3 match Premier League suspension. Van Gaal spoke of the players versatility:
“He can play as a no.9 or no.10 but also as a no.6 or no.8… this year, he will play as a no.9 or no.10 because we have other players for the no.6 and no.8 position.”
The Dutch manager looks to add Fellaini to his line up to increase his forward play:
“We have bought players in midfield and I see him now more as a no.9 or no.10. Last season, he scored a lot of goals for United and he has extra quality in the final third, so we can take profit from that.”
Marouane says that he plays for the team and doesn’t mind where he plays:
“In the past, I have played no.9 and no.10. I have to help the team – I can play there. It’s not important where I play. The most important thing is to win the game, of course. I enjoy all the different positions I can play in.”
Despite being brought to Old Trafford by his old Everton manager David Moyes, Moyes didn’t appear to know how to utilise him at Manchester United, but under Louis van Gaal the Belgian performed quite well.
