The race for Memphis Depay seems to be in full flow as the current Premier League campaign draws to an end. The transfer rumour mill is in full effect with the 21 year-old Dutch international being heavily linked with Manchester United.
PSV technical director Marcel Brands has already confirmed that Manchester United have already enquired about the possible availability of the current Eredivisie top goalscorer. He’s been quoted whilst on Dutch television as saying:
‘We have had a telephone call from them about him’.
‘But no talks have been held yet. There are several top clubs who have expressed an interest’
Depay has previously worked with Louis Van Gaal whilst at the 2014 World Cup. Hugo Borst the man responsible for writing Louis Van Gaal biography, describes Memphis Depay as a perfect fit for Manchester United considering Louis Van Gaal as a ‘father figure’ to young Depay. He’s also been quoted as saying
‘A reunion with his non-biological father would be a blessing. A petulant lad, Memphis is in need of a searching gaze and a gruff commanding voice.’
‘I swear, half a season with Louis as his manager and Memphis will be striding onto the pitch proudly wearing Van Gaal on the back of his shirt’
Depay has had a successful career at PSV, even at such a young age he is the shining light of the team and has played a key role in securing the league title this season. Depay has scored 20 goals in 27 games during his current Eredivisie campaign, he seems like a perfect fit for Manchester United whether he’s playing in a 4-3-3 or a 4-2-3-1 formation. He would be working under a manager which knows him better than any other and I’m sure Van Gaal would bring out the best in him whether it’s in a central role or out wide. Depay would already have an idea on how Van Gaal works, as well as already fitting into his philosophy. Van Gaal has a track record in moulding players into superstars and I’m sure if he acquired the signature of Depay he’d instantly be able to put him on the route to becoming a World Class player.
