Attack is the Best form of Defence for United

When Manchester United faced Crystal Palace on Saturday, they were forced to take to the field without a number of their first choice defenders. This meant that manager Luis Van Gaal was forced to play with a patched up back line, which included midfielder Michael Carrick and Paddy McNair. Instead of seeing this as a potential weakness, however, United took to their business and managed to secure a 1-0 win, something that could build some crucial momentum for both the players and the supporters. Pundits and experts, such as those at bluesq.com, know that Van Gaal has the potential in his side, he just needs the confidence.

Smalling and Rojo Missing

With Chris Smalling suspended following his mindless sending off against Manchester City and Marcos Rojo missing due to a dislocated shoulder, Van Gaal looked to turn to Michael Carrick in central defence. Whilst the former England midfielder was only their to provide makeshift cover, he was reliable and offered the kind of level-headedness and composure on the ball that United have so often lacked at the back this term.

United Fire Power

Van Gaal’s men controlled possession with as much as 71% of the ball and their attacking talent eventually shone through, as Juan Mata netted in the 67th minute. With the kind of fire power that they have within their squad, it likely should have been more than one goal that separated the sides.

Although this may prove a worry for Van Gaal, it is nothing he can’t sort in training before their next match against Arsenal at the Emirates after the international break.

Defensive Vulnerability Nothing New

Regardless of personnel, United have conceded more goals than Luis Van Gaal would have liked so far this season- 14 to be exact– and they have only kept two clean sheets. With or without Rojo and Smalling, the Reds have looked vulnerable at the back so the clean sheet will be undoubtedly pleasing to the eye for anyone involved with Manchester United.

Attack is the best form of defence?

United have now scored just six goals in their last five league games, but they still possess one of the most threatening front lines in the world. The substitution of Di Maria by Van Gaal will likely be a rarity this Premier League season. If Van Gaal follows the ‘attack is the best form of defence’ mantra and his attacking outlets finally start working in unison, then he can be confident that they will win outscore many teams and climb the table.
