Video: Antony scores again for Real Betis as winger shines in La Liga once again

Antony’s Resurgence: Brazilian Winger Shines for Real Betis

Manchester United loanee Antony continued his impressive form for Real Betis, netting a stunning goal in their La Liga clash against Real Sociedad on Sunday. The Brazilian winger, who departed Old Trafford in January, has been enjoying a remarkable revival in Spain under Manuel Pellegrini’s guidance.

Antony’s time at Manchester United was marred by inconsistency and underwhelming performances. After a promising start with three goals in his first three Premier League appearances, the winger’s form dipped dramatically. His output in the 2023/24 campaign was particularly disappointing, with just four goals in 52 appearances across all competitions.

Seeking to reignite his career, Antony made the move to Real Betis during the January transfer window. The change of scenery has proven to be exactly what the 24-year-old needed, as he’s hit the ground running in La Liga.

A String of Impressive Performances

Antony’s impact at Betis has been immediate and significant. He opened his account in Spanish football with a goal against Celta Vigo last weekend, followed by another strike in Betis’ 3-0 Europa Conference League victory over Gent on Thursday.

Sunday’s match against Real Sociedad at the Estadio Benito Villamarin saw Antony continue his hot streak. After a goalless first half, the Brazilian broke the deadlock just six minutes after the restart with a moment of brilliance.

The goal came from a well-worked move, initiated by former Real Madrid midfielder Isco. His precise cross found a teammate who headed the ball into a dangerous area. Real Sociedad’s defence could only partially clear, and the ball fell perfectly for Antony. Showcasing the skill that once made him one of the most sought-after wingers in Europe, Antony connected sweetly with a left-footed volley that left goalkeeper Álex Remiro with no chance.

“Antony is hungry, ambitious, determined and I love him,” Pellegrini enthused after a previous match. “He can be an excellent player for us.”

Statistics Speak Volumes

Antony’s goal against Real Sociedad brings his tally to three goals and an assist in just four appearances for Real Betis. This remarkable return stands in stark contrast to his struggles at Old Trafford and suggests that the Brazilian may be rediscovering the form that prompted Manchester United to invest heavily in him.

The winger’s resurgence has not gone unnoticed, with Real Betis reportedly keen on extending his stay beyond the current loan deal. Ramon Alcaron, the club’s chief executive, hinted at the possibility, saying, “We have very good chemistry with United and the player, who is happy here. It is a possibility that he will continue next season, why not?”

A Bittersweet Success for Manchester United

While Antony’s success in Spain is undoubtedly positive for the player, it raises questions about Manchester United’s ability to nurture talent. Under new manager Ruben Amorim, the Red Devils are struggling to find consistency, currently languishing in the bottom half of the Premier League table.

Antony’s revival at Betis, along with other former United players finding success elsewhere, may prompt the club to reassess its approach to player development and management. As the Brazilian continues to shine in La Liga, Manchester United supporters will be left wondering what might have been had they been able to unlock his potential at Old Trafford.

For now, Antony seems focused on making the most of his opportunity at Real Betis. If he can maintain this level of performance, he may well secure a permanent move to Spain or force his way back into Manchester United’s plans for the future.
