Manchester United’s Dutch forward Joshua Zirkzee is showing promising signs of improvement, according to manager Ruben Amorim. The Portuguese tactician has noted a marked enhancement in Zirkzee’s physical attributes and overall performance on the pitch.
Despite the Red Devils’ disappointing 2-0 defeat at the hands of Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday, Zirkzee emerged as one of the standout performers for United. His impressive display built upon his recent impact as a substitute in the Emirates FA Cup victory over Leicester City, where he netted a crucial equaliser.
The 23-year-old Bologna import, who joined United in the summer transfer window, was deployed in a slightly unfamiliar role as one of two central attacking midfielders. This tactical adjustment by Amorim seemed to bring out the best in Zirkzee, as he showcased his technical prowess and came tantalizingly close to finding the back of the net in both halves.
Amorim’s Tactical Shift
In his post-match press conference, Amorim shed light on his decision to utilise Zirkzee in a more withdrawn role. “I think Josh is not a clear [number] nine, he played more as a 10 [attacking midfielder],” the United boss explained. This tactical tweak appears to have unlocked a new dimension in Zirkzee’s game, allowing him to influence play from deeper positions.
Amorim went on to praise Zirkzee’s physical development: “He’s stronger physically, he’s thinner, he’s working really hard, and he plays in a better position for him. He’s improving, he’s winning more duels and he’s even faster, you feel that in the game, and that helps to make the decision.”
A Potential Run in the Starting XI
With the Old Trafford outfit currently grappling with a spate of illnesses and injuries, Zirkzee may find himself with an extended run in the starting lineup. This opportunity could prove crucial for the Dutchman to cement his place in Amorim’s plans and silence his critics.
Dorgu’s Debut
The United manager also touched upon the Premier League debut of Patrick Dorgu, the club’s mid-season acquisition. The versatile defender, who had previously featured as a right wing-back in the FA Cup, was deployed on the left flank against Spurs.
Amorim praised Dorgu’s adaptability: “He played on the left also, that could help, but he has the experience to play left and right. So Dorgu will improve a lot and, for Josh, the same thing.”
Looking Ahead
As Manchester United prepare for their upcoming Premier League fixture against Everton, both Zirkzee and Dorgu will be keen to build on their encouraging performances. With Amorim at the helm, there’s a palpable sense of optimism surrounding the development of these young talents.
The Red Devils faithful will be hoping that Zirkzee’s resurgence, coupled with Dorgu’s versatility, can provide the spark needed to reignite United’s campaign. As the team looks to climb back up the Premier League table, the performances of these emerging stars could prove pivotal in shaping the club’s fortunes for the remainder of the season.
