Manchester United’s summer plans: Quenda remains a target despite Dorgu signing

Manchester United’s pursuit of Sporting CP’s teenage sensation Giovany Quenda remains firmly on the agenda, despite the January acquisition of Patrick Dorgu. The Red Devils are determined to address key areas of their squad ahead of the 2024/25 season, with the right wing-back position emerging as a priority. Quenda, a highly-rated 17-year-old winger, is seen as a perfect fit for Ruben Amorim’s system, and the club is reportedly exploring a deal to bring him to Old Trafford.

Dorgu’s Arrival and Versatility

United’s January signing of Patrick Dorgu from Lecce was a statement of intent, with the club splashing out a potential £30 million to secure the services of the versatile Danish international. Dorgu, 20, has been deployed in multiple positions by Lecce manager Marco Giampaolo, including left-back, left wing-back, right wing-back, and even on both wings. His adaptability made him an attractive option for United, particularly given the lack of depth in the left wing-back role—a position Amorim has identified as critical to his tactical setup.

However, Dorgu’s debut in the FA Cup against Leicester City raised eyebrows. Amorim opted to play the youngster at right wing-back, leaving Diogo Dalot out of position on the left. Speaking after the dramatic 2-1 victory, Amorim explained his decision: “He played a lot of times for Lecce on the right and on the left. That is one of the characteristics we pay attention to… But the position, and you can see on Wyscout, he can play on both sides.”

Despite this, the Manchester Evening News reports that United see Dorgu’s future primarily on the left flank, leaving the right wing-back slot as an area to be addressed in the summer. This is where Quenda comes into the picture.

Quenda: A Rising Star with Saka-Like Potential

Giovany Quenda has been one of the standout talents in Sporting CP’s academy, earning comparisons to Arsenal’s Bukayo Saka for his explosive pace, technical ability, and versatility. The 17-year-old has already made an impression at senior level, featuring on both flanks for Sporting since breaking into the first team under Amorim last year. His performances have not gone unnoticed, with United reportedly keeping a close eye on his development.

Quenda’s contract at Sporting includes a €100 million release clause, but United are said to be exploring a deal worth around €40 million—a more manageable figure given the club’s financial constraints. The Red Devils’ interest in Quenda predates Amorim’s arrival at Old Trafford, but the Portuguese coach’s familiarity with the youngster has only strengthened their desire to bring him to Manchester.

Jorge Mendes: The Key to the Deal

Super-agent Jorge Mendes, who has a strong relationship with United’s hierarchy, is playing a pivotal role in negotiations. Mendes, who also represents Quenda, met with United officials in November to discuss the potential transfer. The Manchester Evening News reveals that Mendes has acquired 50% of Quenda’s image rights, further cementing his influence over the player’s career.

Mendes was instrumental in United’s signing of Manuel Ugarte from Paris Saint-Germain last summer, and he could now facilitate another key acquisition for Amorim. The Portuguese agent’s involvement increases the likelihood of a deal being struck, as his close ties with both United and Sporting could help bridge the gap in negotiations.

Amorim’s Vision for Quenda

Amorim’s tactical system relies heavily on dynamic, attack-minded wing-backs who can contribute both defensively and offensively. Quenda’s ability to play on either flank, combined with his pace and technical skills, makes him an ideal candidate to thrive in this role. The 17-year-old’s potential to develop into a world-class player aligns with United’s long-term vision under Amorim, who is keen to build a squad capable of competing for major honours.

While Dorgu’s arrival has addressed the left wing-back position, Quenda’s potential signing would provide competition and depth on the right flank. This would allow Amorim to fully implement his preferred 3-4-3 formation, giving United greater tactical flexibility and balance.

The Bigger Picture

United’s pursuit of Quenda is part of a broader strategy to strengthen the squad ahead of the 2024/25 season. The club is determined to address key areas of weakness, with the right wing-back position seen as a priority. Quenda’s potential arrival would not only bolster the squad’s depth but also provide a long-term solution in a critical position.

However, competition for Quenda’s signature is likely to be fierce, with several top clubs across Europe monitoring his progress. United will need to act decisively if they are to secure his services, especially with Mendes playing a key role in negotiations.

A Bright Future Ahead

As United look to rebuild under Amorim, the potential signing of Quenda offers a glimpse into the club’s vision for the future. The 17-year-old represents the kind of young, dynamic talent that United are keen to bring in as they aim to return to the pinnacle of English and European football.

For Quenda, the opportunity to join one of the world’s biggest clubs represents the next step in his burgeoning career. While the pressure of playing for United is immense, the teenager has already shown that he has the talent and mentality to thrive on the biggest stage.

As the summer transfer window approaches, the speculation surrounding Quenda’s future is set to intensify. For United fans, the prospect of seeing the Portuguese starlet in a red shirt offers a glimmer of hope after a challenging season. Whether the club can finalise a deal remains to be seen, but one thing is certain: Giovany Quenda is a player who could transform United’s fortunes on the right flank.
