Leny Yoro has revealed the remarkable story behind his crucial penalty

Manchester United’s rising star Leny Yoro has revealed the remarkable story behind his crucial penalty in the FA Cup shootout victory against Arsenal last month. The 19-year-old French defender, who joined the Red Devils from Lille last summer, stepped up in the high-pressure situation at the Emirates Stadium despite never having taken a professional penalty before.

In an exclusive interview with Inside United, the club’s official magazine, Yoro shared the moments leading up to his coolly dispatched spot-kick. “The coach asked if I wanted to shoot and I said yes, because why not?” Yoro recalled. “I’ve never shot a penalty in my life professionally, so I wanted to try and it went well, so that’s good.”

The young centre-back’s decision to volunteer for such a crucial moment speaks volumes about his confidence and character. Yoro’s penalty was the third of United’s five successful conversions, helping the team secure a 5-3 shootout victory after a tense 1-1 draw over 120 minutes.

Yoro’s revelation is particularly surprising given his defensive role and young age. Typically, more experienced attacking players are called upon in such situations. However, Ruben Amorim’s faith in the teenager proved well-founded, as Yoro sent Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya the wrong way with a composed finish.

The Frenchman’s preparation for the moment came during training sessions leading up to the FA Cup tie. “In training before an FA Cup game, we shoot penalties. So I was a little bit confident but, without the pressure, it’s not the same at training,” Yoro explained. “It’s just the question of choosing a good side and putting the ball in.”

Despite the enormity of the occasion – a packed Emirates Stadium and millions watching worldwide – Yoro maintained a remarkably calm demeanour. “Honestly, I wasn’t under too much pressure as, for me, a penalty is down to a little bit of chance,” he said. “Choosing a good side, for me, I take the ball and, if I score, it’s good.”

This composure under pressure is becoming a hallmark of Yoro’s game. Since his arrival at Old Trafford, the defender has already featured in high-profile matches at the Emirates, Etihad Stadium, and Anfield. Far from being overawed, Yoro is relishing these experiences.

“These are big stadiums, I think every player wants to play here and it’s a big atmosphere against big teams,” he enthused. “This gives you a lot of experience in the Premier League and this is why, to play these types of games, that you come to the Prem. For me, it’s really good to play these types of games for my experience.”

Yoro’s rapid adaptation to English football is evident in his 16 appearances for United since joining. His performances have drawn praise from fans and pundits alike, with many seeing shades of Rio Ferdinand in his elegant style of play. The young Frenchman’s ability to read the game, coupled with his comfort on the ball, has made him an increasingly important figure in Amorim’s tactical setup.

As United prepare for their upcoming Premier League clash against Tottenham Hotspur, all eyes will be on Yoro once again. The match presents another opportunity for the defender to showcase his talents on a big stage and continue his impressive development.

With his penalty heroics against Arsenal now etched in United folklore, fans will be eager to see what other surprises Leny Yoro has in store as he continues to establish himself as a key player in this new era at Old Trafford.
