Manchester United secured a dramatic 2-1 victory over Leicester City in the FA Cup fourth round, advancing to the fifth round of the competition. The match, played at Old Trafford on Friday night, saw United come from behind to clinch the win in stoppage time.
The first half was a struggle for United, with Leicester dominating possession and creating better chances. Bobby De Cordova-Reid put the visitors ahead just before half-time, capitalising on a rebound after Wilfred Ndidi’s initial shot was saved by AndrĂ© Onana.
United’s new signing Patrick Dorgu made his debut, starting on the right wing-back position. While he showed some promising moments, including a shot that went over the bar, he was substituted at half-time for Alejandro Garnacho.
The introduction of Garnacho proved pivotal, as he immediately injected energy into United’s attack. The Argentine winger came close to scoring, but his deflected shot was brilliantly cleared off the line by Caleb Okoli.
United’s persistence paid off when Joshua Zirkzee equalised midway through the second half, tapping in after Rasmus Hojlund’s effort was blocked.
The dramatic winner came in the 93rd minute when Harry Maguire headed home a Bruno Fernandes free-kick, sending Old Trafford into raptures. However, there was controversy surrounding the goal, as Leicester manager Ruud van Nistelrooy felt Maguire was offside, but with no VAR in use, the goal stood.
United manager Ruben Amorim admitted it was a “poor performance” from his side, particularly in the first half. However, he praised the team’s improved energy and speed in the second half, which ultimately led to the comeback victory.
The win keeps United’s hopes of retaining the FA Cup alive, as they move into the fifth round of the competition.
