Ruben Amorim speaks for the first time on Marcus Rashford loan move

In a candid press conference ahead of Manchester United’s FA Cup clash with Leicester City, head coach Ruben Amorim shed light on the circumstances surrounding Marcus Rashford’s loan move to Aston Villa. The Portuguese tactician’s revelations offer a glimpse into the challenges faced by both player and coach in adapting to a new footballing philosophy at Old Trafford.

Rashford’s United career took an unexpected turn following the Manchester derby in mid-December. After being dropped for that crucial fixture, the England international publicly expressed his readiness for a “new challenge”. This statement marked the beginning of the end for Rashford’s time under Amorim, with his last appearance coming in the Europa League against Viktoria Plzen on December 12th 2024.

Amorim’s frank assessment of the situation reveals the disconnect between his vision and Rashford’s adaptation: “I couldn’t put Marcus to see the way you’re supposed to play football and to train the way I see it. And sometimes you have one player that is really good with one coach, and the same player with another coach is different. I just wish the best to Rashford and to Unai Emery, and they can connect because he’s a very good player.”

The head coach’s comments highlight the complexities of implementing a new system, especially with established players. Amorim was quick to dispel notions of a personal rift, emphasising the natural ebb and flow of player-coach relationships in football: “You know, like me, that it’s not the way that occurs. It’s something that you feel as a coach and as a player. It’s quite normal. It happened with a lot of coaches.”

Amorim’s decisiveness in sanctioning Rashford’s departure, along with loans for Tyrell Malacia and Antony, underscores his commitment to reshaping the squad in his image. The Portuguese coach remains focused on the immediate future, deflecting questions about Rashford’s potential return: “Guys, in the summer… like we said before, we are fighting for our jobs until the summer. So, I am just focused on these games.”

United’s January transfer activity has raised eyebrows, with the departures of three experienced players offset by the arrivals of young defenders Patrick Dorgu and Ayden Heaven. Amorim acknowledges the risk but defends the strategy: “We try to find the right players with the physicality for this league: young players, hungry players. Sometimes, we cannot spend a lot of money with players. So it’s that kind of profile that we look for.”

The upcoming FA Cup tie against Leicester City brings an intriguing subplot, as United face former interim boss Ruud van Nistelrooy. Amorim’s decision not to retain the Dutchman on his staff speaks volumes about his commitment to his own methods: “I have my team and my staff. I could keep Ruud because it was a good thing for me, a popular thing to do. But I will not put Ruud in front of my guys, no matter what.”

As United prepare for this crucial cup tie, Amorim remains undeterred by comparisons with his predecessors’ records: “It’s not awkward and I think it’s normal. He knew the team, he worked with the team. I made some decisions that are really hard, to sometimes create problems, friction in the team.”

The match against Leicester, kicking off at 20:00 GMT, represents more than just a chance to progress in the FA Cup. It’s an opportunity for Amorim to vindicate his methods and for United to demonstrate progress under their new regime. As the Red Devils navigate this transitional period, all eyes will be on Old Trafford to see if Amorim’s bold decisions will bear fruit in the quest for silverware.
