Napoli Chief Reveals Why Alejandro Garnacho’s January Move Collapsed Amid Wage Demands

The January transfer window was rife with speculation surrounding the future of Manchester United’s Alejandro Garnacho, with Napoli emerging as one of the most serious suitors for the Argentine winger. However, the move ultimately fell through, and Napoli’s sporting director, Giovanni Manna, has now shed light on the reasons behind the collapse, citing Garnacho’s “unrealistic wage demands” as the primary stumbling block.

A Transfer Saga Unfolds

Throughout the winter transfer window, Garnacho’s name was frequently linked with a potential exit from Old Trafford. As a homegrown talent, any fee received for the 20-year-old would count as 100% profit under the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR), making him an attractive asset for United to cash in on if the right offer came along.

Napoli and Chelsea were the two clubs most strongly linked with Garnacho, with the Italian side reportedly making a formal bid for the winger. However, United rejected the offer, holding out for a higher fee. Negotiations continued late into the window, but a deal could not be reached. Now, Manna has revealed that the real issue was Garnacho’s salary expectations, which Napoli deemed excessive and unjustifiable.

Manna’s Explanation

Speaking at a press conference, Manna provided a detailed account of Napoli’s failed pursuit of Garnacho. He explained that the club had initially targeted the United star as a potential replacement for Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, who was rumoured to be leaving the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium. However, Garnacho’s wage demands proved to be a significant obstacle.

“We pushed for Garnacho before Kvara [Kvaratskhelia] left, but he wanted a salary we couldn’t justify,” Manna said [via Manchester Evening News].

The Napoli chief also hinted that Garnacho’s demands shifted midway through negotiations, which further complicated matters. “Garnacho and Adeyemi were close, but we don’t want to create false expectations. If a player changes his stance midway and suddenly wants different conditions, I don’t like it. If you want to come to Napoli, you should want it from the start.”

Manna’s comments suggest that Napoli were unwilling to compromise their salary structure to accommodate Garnacho’s demands, even as they sought to strengthen their attacking options.

Napoli’s Transfer Strategy

Manna also touched on Napoli’s broader transfer strategy, emphasising the challenges of doing business in the January window. “We tried to replace Kvara, but January is tough—strong players rarely move, and some valuations didn’t align with our financial parameters,” he said.

The Napoli director made it clear that the club would not deviate from its financial principles, even in the face of public pressure. “We won’t compromise on salary structure. When you have money, prices rise. Summer is different—more availability, clubs need to sell first. We won’t overpay or go beyond our financial structure.”

He added, “We have a clear strategy. Some clubs can afford things we cannot, and that’s fine—it aligns with our history and values. But Napoli is financially stable, in the black, and not in debt. We will not make reckless signings just to satisfy public pressure.”

Garnacho’s Season So Far

Despite the transfer speculation, Garnacho has remained a key figure for Manchester United this season. The 20-year-old has made 35 appearances across all competitions, contributing seven goals and six assists. His pace, dribbling, and flair have made him a fan favourite at Old Trafford, and his performances have been a bright spot in what has been a challenging campaign for the Red Devils.

Garnacho’s ability to perform under pressure was on full display during United’s recent FA Cup third-round victory over Arsenal, where he played a crucial role in the team’s resilient display. His commitment to the cause has been evident, and it appears that he remains fully focused on helping United achieve their goals this season.

Looking Ahead

Garnacho and his United teammates are back in action this Friday as they host Ruud van Nistelrooy’s Leicester City in the FA Cup fourth round. The match presents an opportunity for the young winger to continue his development and showcase his talent on one of the biggest stages in English football.

For Napoli, the focus will now shift to the summer transfer window, where they hope to secure their targets without compromising their financial stability. As for Garnacho, his future at Manchester United seems secure for now, with the club likely to resist any further interest in their prized asset.

Final Thoughts

The collapse of Garnacho’s potential move to Napoli highlights the complexities of modern football transfers, particularly when it comes to wage demands and financial constraints. While Napoli were keen to bring the Argentine to Serie A, their commitment to maintaining a sustainable salary structure ultimately scuppered the deal.

For Manchester United, retaining Garnacho is a significant boost as they look to build a squad capable of competing for major honours. His talent and potential make him a vital part of the club’s future, and fans will be eager to see him continue to shine in the famous red shirt.
