Casemiro on the Brink of Old Trafford Exit as Besiktas Pursue Brazilian Midfielder

Despite the January transfer window having drawn to a close in England, Manchester United could still see significant movement in their squad, with reports indicating that Casemiro is eager to complete a move to Turkish giants Besiktas. The experienced midfielder, who has found himself increasingly marginalised at Old Trafford, is reportedly “keen” to reunite with former United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Solskjaer’s Influence Sparks Besiktas’ Interest

The interest from Besiktas has gained traction following Solskjaer’s appointment as their new manager in January. The Norwegian, who has been out of the dugout since his sacking by United in 2021, has wasted no time in making his mark in Istanbul. His tenure started on a high, as his side emphatically dispatched Athletic Club 4-1 in the Europa League. However, despite that commanding performance, the result was not enough to secure progression in the competition, thereby ending any possibility of an immediate reunion with Manchester United in European action.

Currently sitting in a disappointing seventh place in the Turkish Süper Lig, Besiktas are in desperate need of reinforcements. With the Turkish transfer window remaining open until 11 February, the club still has the opportunity to bolster its squad – a luxury not afforded to English clubs following their transfer deadline.

Manchester United’s Stance on Casemiro’s Departure

Manchester United, for their part, appear more than willing to offload Casemiro, primarily due to his substantial wages. The Brazilian midfield enforcer, who pockets a reported £350,000 per week, represents a significant financial strain on the club’s resources. Given the need to restructure their squad ahead of the summer, shedding his salary would provide a crucial economic boost.

Having arrived at Old Trafford in the summer of 2022 with high expectations following a glittering career at Real Madrid, Casemiro initially impressed with his leadership and tenacity. However, his influence has waned under the new regime, particularly with Ruben Amorim now favouring youth and energy in midfield. The Portuguese tactician has regularly opted for academy graduate Toby Collyer over Casemiro, citing the 21-year-old’s superior stamina and dynamism as key reasons behind his selection.

Casemiro’s last Premier League start came in December, a humbling 2-0 defeat to Newcastle at Old Trafford. The match exposed United’s frailties in midfield, as Newcastle’s energetic and disciplined core dominated proceedings. Since then, the Brazilian has found himself largely confined to the bench, with his role increasingly peripheral in Amorim’s plans.

Besiktas Intensify Efforts to Secure Casemiro’s Signature

According to Turkish outlet A Spor, Besiktas have significantly ramped up their pursuit of Casemiro. Reports suggest that the 32-year-old is not only open to the move but is now actively “keen” on making the switch to Istanbul, particularly with Solskjaer pushing for his arrival. Turkish publication Fotomaç adds that Besiktas view the signing as a pivotal move that could bring much-needed leadership and experience to their midfield.

Their report states: “Manchester United’s world-famous Brazilian star Casemiro is at the top of the list. According to Fotomaç, Beşiktaş has accelerated its efforts to bring in 32-year-old Brazilian defensive midfielder Casemiro. This transfer is seen as an important move that could add leadership to Beşiktaş’s midfield. Casemiro is also said to be keen on Solskjaer’s Kartal.”

Given the mutual interest between all parties involved, a transfer before next week’s deadline is now a strong possibility. United would benefit significantly from offloading Casemiro’s hefty wages, allowing them to reinvest strategically in the summer. For Besiktas, securing a player of Casemiro’s calibre would not only improve their midfield but also add a proven winner to their ranks as they aim to salvage their season and climb the Süper Lig table.

A Transfer Beneficial for All Parties?

The potential departure of Casemiro would mark the end of a short but impactful chapter at Old Trafford. While his leadership and experience have been invaluable at times, the direction of Manchester United under Amorim suggests a move towards younger, more dynamic options in midfield. With financial implications also at play, this deal could suit all parties involved: Casemiro securing a fresh challenge, Besiktas gaining a world-class midfielder, and United clearing significant wages off their books ahead of a crucial summer of rebuilding.

The coming days will be decisive in determining whether this transfer materialises, but all indications point towards Casemiro’s tenure at Manchester United nearing its conclusion.
