Manchester United have reportedly identified Chelsea’s Christopher Nkunku as a potential transfer target amidst growing uncertainty surrounding Alejandro Garnacho’s future at Old Trafford.
The Red Devils have already rejected a £40 million bid from Napoli for Garnacho, who remains under contract until the summer of 2028.
Although Napoli are now believed to be exploring alternative options, Garnacho is increasingly being linked with a move to Chelsea, one of United’s Premier League rivals.
Recent reports suggest that Chelsea are preparing to make an official approach for the Argentine international. United are said to be open to significant offers for Garnacho, partly due to concerns over meeting the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules.
Should Garnacho depart, Manchester United may look to bolster their attacking options, particularly as Antony is reportedly set to join Real Betis on loan and Marcus Rashford continues to attract speculation about a potential winter move.
United Weigh Up Nkunku Move
According to Sky Sports News, Manchester United are considering a surprise move for Chelsea’s Nkunku before the transfer window closes on 3rd February.
The report claims that discussions have already been held between intermediaries about a deal that could see the Frenchman make the switch to Old Trafford.
While Chelsea are reportedly reluctant to sanction Nkunku’s departure, they are believed to be open to offers in the region of £70 million.
However, United are unlikely to meet Chelsea’s valuation, suggesting a compromise would be necessary to secure the forward’s services.
Bayern Munich Enter the Fray
Manchester United are not the only club interested in Nkunku, as Bayern Munich have also expressed an interest in signing the former RB Leipzig star during the current transfer window.
The Bavarian giants have so far failed to strike a deal with Chelsea, and their chances of securing Nkunku may hinge on Mathys Tel. Reports suggest that Bayern could improve their prospects of landing Nkunku if Tel agrees to move in the opposite direction as part of a separate arrangement.
Nkunku’s future at Stamford Bridge appears uncertain, as he has struggled to establish himself as a regular starter under Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca.
This season, the France international has started just three Premier League matches, compared to seven starts in the UEFA Europa Conference League (including qualifying), where Maresca has often rotated his first-choice players.
Despite limited opportunities in the league, Nkunku has demonstrated his goal-scoring ability, netting 13 goals in 28 appearances across all competitions this season.
