Manchester United are believed to have their sights set on Sunderland’s prodigious young midfielder, Chris Rigg. The 16-year-old turned heads when he found the back of the net during Sunderland’s dominant 5-0 victory over Southampton just last week.
Scoring at 16 years and 76 days old, Rigg’s EFL goal-scoring feat is surpassed only by Jude Bellingham’s record.
His remarkable talent hasn’t gone unnoticed, with reports from The i suggesting that the Red Devils are closely monitoring Rigg. Comparisons are being made between the young talent and another gem from Wearside, Jordan Henderson.
Last season, Rigg made headlines by gracing the pitch as a senior player at just 15 years of age. With Tony Mowbray at the helm this season, he’s anticipated to play an even more significant role for the Black Cats. Notably, Jobe Bellingham, Jude’s younger sibling, has been securing regular starts at the Stadium of Light, impressive for a 17-year-old.
While Rigg is yet to cement his position in the starting lineup, Mowbray seems committed to nurturing his growth. The Sunderland manager revealed to The i his intentions of including Rigg in the matchday squad throughout the season, allowing him to vie for a starting spot.
In addition to his club achievements, Rigg has proudly donned the England shirt at the youth level. He’s made a mark with the Under-18s, having played four times in 2023.
But United aren’t the only Premier League heavyweights keen on Rigg. Rivalry may be intensified as Newcastle United, Sunderland’s arch-nemesis, are also reportedly circling the young sensation. An interesting subplot emerges here – Rigg’s family are die-hard Newcastle supporters. However, the player himself has been ingrained in Sunderland’s academy for the majority of his formative years.
