Manchester United have sealed the return of Jonny Evans, penning a one-year contract with the 35-year-old veteran.
Evans, who first donned the United jersey in 2007, has secured a short-term deal with the club after showcasing his enduring quality to manager Erik ten Hag. His re-signing comes after the defender was let go by Leicester City.
The Northern Irishman marks United’s third acquisition on a bustling deadline day, following the arrivals of Altay Bayindir and Sergio Reguilon. His comeback to Old Trafford comes at a crucial time, as injuries to Raphael Varane and Luke Shaw have left Ten Hag short of options in central defence.
Evans expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “I am delighted to join Manchester United, a place which has always felt like home. This club and the fans have shaped me as a player and as a person since I was 15 years old, and I am delighted to be back where it all began as part of this talented squad.”
He continued, “I’ve really enjoyed working under the manager and his coaching staff since the start of pre-season, and I’m looking forward to helping this group achieve success together at this fantastic football club.”
During his initial tenure at Manchester United, Evans made 198 appearances, netting seven goals. His time at Old Trafford was marked by significant silverware, including three Premier League crowns and a Champions League trophy. Following that, he had stints at West Bromwich Albion for three seasons and five seasons with Leicester City.
Speaking about the signing, United’s director of football, John Murtough, said: “Jonny is a winner who has experienced everything in the game. These characteristics are invaluable to the culture that we’re building here.”
Murtough added, “His attitude and work ethic are second to none, and Erik and the coaching staff know he’s someone they can rely on whenever needed this season. We all welcome Jonny back and hope he can add further achievements to the success he has already enjoyed with the club.”
