Manchester United are reportedly pursuing Wolves right-back Nelson Semedo, according to sources who have spoken to Football Insider.
The Red Devils are keen to strengthen their right-flank defence with an attacking full-back who excels at overlapping, and 29-year-old Semedo fits the bill. It has been revealed that United has reached out to Wolves in the dying days of the summer transfer window, exploring the possibility of a deal.
Wolves may be in a position where they must part with more of their top players before the end of August to comply with financial fair play regulations. The club’s recent player sales include notable names such as Ruben Neves, Nathan Collins, and Raul Jimenez.
This selling spree contributed to the exit of head coach Julen Lopetegui, with Gary O’Neil swiftly stepping into the manager’s role.
Additionally, Wolves’ midfield maestro Matheus Nunes has been linked with a move to Manchester City in the waning weeks of the transfer period.
Semedo, a Portuguese international with 25 caps, has a contract at Wolves that runs until June 2025. He has already featured prominently in the 2023-24 Premier League season, playing the full 90 minutes in both fixtures.
During the last season, Semedo played a vital role for Wolves, delivering two assists in 41 appearances across various competitions.
The Midlands club secured Semedo’s services in 2020 for a fee reported to be nearly £37 million.
Meanwhile, Manchester United have begun the season with Aaron Wan-Bissaka as their primary right-back, who provided an assist against Wolves on the opening day. Diogo Dalot, another option for the right-back position, committed his future to United earlier this year by penning a lucrative five-year contract extension.
United’s interest in Semedo underscores their intent to bolster the squad’s depth, particularly in areas where they seek specific attributes to fit their tactical approach. How this potential move will unfold remains to be seen, especially considering the time constraints of the transfer window and Wolves’ own considerations for the future.
