Rennes seek Manchester United first-team defender as top transfer target

Rennes have set their sights on Manchester United’s Victor Lindelof should they lose Arthur Theate in the imminent transfer window, as reported by Fabrice Hawkins.

The Swedish defender, currently ranking third behind Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez in United’s centre-back pecking order, isn’t actively seeking an exit from Old Trafford. However, should Theate depart, Lindelof has emerged as a top target for Rennes.

Even though Lindelof appears content with his role at the Red Devils, navigating a transfer might prove intricate.

The start of the year saw Lindelof often warming the bench, but his importance grew evident during the tail end of the season. The £31 million acquisition was instrumental in Manchester United’s push for a Premier League top-four finish.

With Varane and Martinez back in contention, Lindelof might find himself benched more frequently. Yet, given Varane’s susceptibility to injuries, Lindelof should still see considerable game time.

From our perspective, there’s little reason for him to contemplate a move away. If anything, the speculations hint more towards Harry Maguire’s exit, although that too appears dubious. Maguire, the former team captain, recently dismissed an offer from West Ham United after initially reaching a verbal agreement.

Interestingly, Manchester United had eyed Benjamin Pavard of Bayern Munich as a potential replacement for Maguire. However, the French international seems set for a switch to Inter Milan. Talks between Inter and the Bavarian giants have progressed significantly, and a deal might be sealed in the coming days.
