Manchester United’s Chief Executive, Richard Arnold, reportedly informed senior personnel on August 4 that Mason Greenwood would be making a return to the club.
On Wednesday afternoon, the 20-time English champions issued a statement confirming the conclusion of their internal investigation into the events that led to Greenwood’s arrest in January 2022.
Part of the statement read, “The fact-finding phase of our investigation is now complete, and we are in the final stages of making a decision on Mason’s future.”
Contrary to media speculation, that decision has not yet been made and is currently the subject of intensive internal deliberation.”
However, as per The Athletic, the Chief Executive of Man United had notified the club’s executive leadership earlier this month that the 21-year-old would be making a comeback to Old Trafford for the 2023-24 campaign.
The comprehensive report suggests that Arnold intended to create a video explaining the club’s decision to reinstate Greenwood, in the face of substantial criticism.
Reportedly, the Man United Chief had decided that the forward wouldn’t participate in any activities related to the Manchester United Foundation, the club’s charitable arm. This decision was made despite his return to the Red Devils after being out of the picture since January 2022.
The club had been planning an announcement for August 4, with initial reports indicating that a verdict would be reached before the commencement of the new Premier League season.
In January 2022, Greenwood was arrested on suspicion of rape and assault. Subsequently, he faced further arrests on charges of sexual assault and threats to kill. However, the charges were dropped in February, enabling him to continue his career without legal impediments.
Recently, Greenwood has been seen participating in training sessions in public spaces, indicating his readiness to resume his career this season. Nevertheless, Manchester United has emphasized that a final decision hasn’t been made, despite these reports.
Greenwood’s last appearance for the Red Devils was against West Ham United on January 22, 2022, where he played 82 minutes in a 1-0 victory for the hosts at Old Trafford.
In total, Greenwood has made 129 appearances for Man United, with 35 goals and 12 assists to his name. He still has two years remaining on his contract.
The club has not provided any indication of when a statement confirming their plans for Greenwood will be released, although talk of a potential loan departure has diminished in recent weeks.
