In one of the more outlandish rumours of this summer’s transfer window, Manchester United are reportedly keen to bring Cristiano Ronaldo back to Old Trafford for the not-insignificant sum of £132 million, with Paul Pogba heading in the other direction to Real Madrid. The report, provided by Don Balon and cited by Caught Offside suggests that so keen are United to bring the Portuguese back to the club that he left in 2009 that they would swap the most expensive player in their history alongside a record fee. They also suggest that Jose Mourinho is keen to remove the Frenchman from his squad after a difficult second half of the season saw the former Juventus midfielder struggle to perform.
Don Balon certainly have previous when it comes to presenting unlikely transfer deals as potential facts, so perhaps a report on this scale shouldn’t be that much of a shock, but still, it would be a gigantic shock if this rumour turned out to be even slightly close to the truth. Issues between Mourinho and Pogba are less-than secret, but there will be some good odds on him returning to Manchester United, even better with this virgin games promo code but after an £89m outlay to bring the player to the club, it would represent an incredible embarrassment should he be sold barely two years on from his grand unveiling.
In terms of Ronaldo, having seen United played for fools by his want-away comments in the past, it appears as if the club aren’t willing to include themselves in any discussions regarding the Real forward’s future for the time being, and no credible reports have been released suggesting that a return to the club where he made his name is on the cards. Given that Ronaldo’s relationship with Mourinho was hardly stellar during the former Chelsea boss’ time at the club, it would be a huge surprise for the two to reunite at United. Best to file this one under ‘highly unlikely’.
