Shakthar Donetsk midfielder Fred has confirmed that talks with Manchester United regarding a move to the Premier League club are at an advanced stage. £43million offer had been accepted the Brazilian has confirmed that talks between the clubs have been ongoing since January, and that he confirms that United have bid for his services:
“Talks have been at an advanced stage since January, if I am not mistaken,” he said. “There was a possible transfer to City. Shortly after, both clubs, City and United talked with Shakhtar and with my agents about a possible transfer.
And if I am not mistaken, there was news of a strong bid by United. But I am focused solely on the World Cup.My agents are taking care of this, led by (former Arsenal player) Gilberto Silva. He’s a very calm guy, one that I give all the freedom [to decide], as he is someone I deeply trust.”
It was confirmed on Thursday that a 50 million euro, £43million offer had been accepted by Shakthar Donetsk
Whilst these comments tend to toe the standard line of ‘focus on the World Cup’ when a transfer is on the cards, it’s refreshing to hear Fred acknowledge United’s interest so publicly. Given that multiple sources appear to have been briefed about a deal being close to completion between United and the Ukrainian side, and with Brazil due in North West England for a friendly with Croatia at Anfield, there’s a chance that a deal could be sealed before festivities in Russia begin. Anfield is barely an hour away from United’s Carrington base, so a medical could potentially take place whilst the player is in the country with his national side.
Having spent two seasons in Brazil’s Serie A with Internacional, Fred has been with Shakhtar since 2013, making 210 appearances and scoring 22 goals in the process. A move to Old Trafford would surely represent a huge step up for the player, one with Jose Mourinho will likely be certain that he is capable of making.
