United’s Champions League Journey

Manchester United started their 2017/18 Champions League journey back in September of last year after qualifying off the back of a Europa league win. They played Basel in the first game of the group stage and managed to pick up a solid 3-0 win at home to kick off the campaign.

Their next game was away to Russian side CSKA Moscow which is never a fixture to play for any side. However, they stepped up to the task and came away with a strong 4-1 over the Russian side. The good form didn’t stop there for United though with them winning a further two games against Benfica both home and away.

Towards the end of November, they were still looking strong only managing to pick up two losses in the Premier League at this point with a game away to Basel coming up they looked strong after winning comfortably in the first leg. It was here that United picked up their first loss of their Champions League campaign against the reigning 8th consecutive Swiss Super League winners.

They then went on to win their last game 2-1 against CSKA Moscow and in turn managing to top Group A with 15 points acquired and 12 goals scored. Now they had managed to cruise though the group stage it was time to see who they would play in the next round, on the 11th Decemeber 2017 the draw was done and Manchester United are to play Sevilla away in the first leg of the round of 16 on Wednesday 21st February 2018.

Sevilla is potentially one of the best teams that Manchester United could have been drawn against as they got the least amount of points of any team that managed to qualify from the group stage and also conceded 4x more goals than United in the group stage. The other teams they could potentially have been drawn against were Bayern, Chelsea, Juventus, Shakhtar Donetsk, Porto or Real Madrid.

United are favourites for the game against Sevilla currently sitting around 7/5 to win the first game away ay Sevilla so hopefully they can perform as they’re capable and pick up the important away points. So let’s say theoretically United manage to win both legs and get through to the quarter-finals if all the bookies favourites did win they could find them up against one of these teams, Juventus, Man City, Liverpool, PSG, Roma, Barcelona or Bayern. Which I think would be the first real test for Manchester United this year but we’ll just have to wait and see how they get on against Sevilla first. However, if you’re feeling confident that this is United’s year to win the competition then you can currently get them at 14/1 with most bookies.
