According to report in The Irish Independent, Antoine Griezmann is yet to give Manchester United a final answer regarding his highly speculated move to Old Trafford. The Frenchman, currently plying his trade in La Liga for Atletico Madrid, is said to want to wait before he is willing to agree to the move, purely to see how United’s season unfurls. The club are currently sixth, outside of the Champions League places, which has added a layer of uncertainty to the transfer with Griezmann wishing to play in Europe’s top club competition.
To further complicate matters, Griezmann also wishes to explore the extent of Real Madrid’s interest in his services, although any potential deal to allow the former Real Sociedad forward to switch clubs in the Spanish capital could be fraught with issues; as previously reported, the presidents of both clubs have a gentlemen’s agreement that stops them from agitating players for a move between them.
If this is the case, then the pressure on United to either finish in the top four of the Premier League, or win the Europa League will have increased even further. Since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement in 2013, the club have only qualified for the Champions League once in three seasons, and exclusion again this season under Jose Mourinho could prove even more costly than previously thought.
