Manchester United may have a fight on their hands to keep hold of Anthony Martial, according to reports. According to The Daily Mirror, Tottenham Hotspur are eyeing up a move for the former AS Monaco and hope to take advantage of the player’s supposed unrest and difficulties surrounding his relationship with Jose Mourinho.
It’s not surprising to see such reports surface, given the way in which Mourinho has handled the young Frenchman this season. Martial has been dropped from the side and squad on several occasions after good performances, and publicly challenged to show his best form on a consistent basis by his new manager. His 7 goals in 23 appearances don’t make for terrible reading, but Martial has struggled to perform in the same way as he did in his debut season at the club under Louis van Gaal.
Yet it would still represent a major surprise to see Martial leave United. Mourinho is clearly a fan, despite his tough public stance, and is clearly trying to get the best out of him. Martial, for his part, seems enamoured with the club, and it would be a surprise to see him jump ship at this stage of his career given what an integral part of the club he has been over the last 18 months. His celebration having scored United’s second in Saturday’s 2-0 win over Watford certainly didn’t hint at any unhappiness, supposed or otherwise.
