Whilst Zlatan Ibrahimovic has enjoyed a prosperous season for Manchester United since signing from Paris Saint Germain on a free transfer last summer, it would be remiss of Jose Mourinho to not have one eye on his club’s future up front. The big Swede is 35, so news that United are reportedly looking at a striker 15 years his junior isn’t completely surprising.
The player in question is Benfica’s Goncalo Guedes, with The Guardian suggesting that Guedes is being eyed up by both United and Ibrahimovic’s last club. Monaco, who are currently three points ahead of PSG in Ligue 1, are also interested in Guedes’ services.
Whether or not this turns into anything concrete remains to be seen. Benfica have a history of flogging their players to the highest bidder and seemingly love to sell a player to one of Europe’s bigger clubs every chance they get. From United’s perspective, they have several young and talented options that can play up front or out wide, so perhaps adding another to the pack isn’t the wisest move, especially given Guedes’ lack of Premier League experience.
