It appears, for all intents and purposes, that Antoine Griezmann to Manchester United will be the next big transfer saga. That means, alongside this week’s report in the Independent that United are confident of sealing a deal for the Frenchman’s services after this season has concluded, that we’ll see reports like we’ve seen today in FourFourTwo which carry quotes from Atletico Madrid’s powerbrokers stating very much the opposite.
Speaking to Spanish show Minuto #0, Enrique Cerezo, the club’s president said: “I don’t know what the interest from Manchester [United] will be.”
“I can say that Griezmann will be an Atletico player for a long time.”
This will likely be the way of things for the coming months, especially as we approach the summer transfer window. Of course, Atleti will be loathe to lose a player of Griezmann’s quality, but United have an increasingly attractive project on offer, and the opportunity for the Frenchman to join a club of this stature doesn’t come around often. As such, whilst Cerezo’s comments are a clear attempt to diffuse all of the rumours surrounding this potential exit, it’s worth bearing in mind that we are still in the early stages of what could be a very public transfer saga.
