English penalty woes resurface as Manchester United lose to Middlesbrough

Manchester United and Middlesbrough ended extra time of their Capital One Cup match 0-0 and so the game went to penalties.

Van Gaal selected Manchester United’s most experienced players on the field and their least experienced player to take the penalties.

Young Brazilian, Andreas Pereira, managed to score his spot kick for the Red Devils but it was his experienced team mates who disappointed.

England and United veterans Wayne Rooney, Ashley Young and Michael Carrick all stepped up and all failed to score. Rooney and Young’s shots were well saved by Middlesbrough’s Spanish keeper Tomás Mejías. Carrick missed the target entirely.

As Boro bundled their victorious keeper the Manchester United manager was seen to be fuming on the touchline. He did not want to lose this tie.

This means that for the second season running, Manchester United exit the Capital One Cup to lower league opposition.

Middlesbrough have been drawn against Everton in the next round of the cup.

Enjoy that? Give it a share!
