Liverpool’s new manager Jürgen Klopp has already started shopping around to try and turn the fortunes of the Merseyside club around.
One of his top targets is the Brazilian-born Italian defensive midfielder, Jorginho of S.S. Lazio. The 23 year old has only been at his current club since January last year, but this season he already has 2 assists in 7 games.
Manchester United have now started to show interest in Jorginho as well.
Over van Gaal’s three transfer windows with United he has signed three central midfielders. Last season he added Ander Herrera from Athletic Bilbao, and this year Bastian Schweinsteiger and Morgan Schneiderlin joined the club.
Morgan Schneiderlin is the only Manchester United centre-mid that can really be classified as a defensive midfielder. His particular skill set was clearly absent in the Arsenal game, as the Gunner’s attack tore through the midfield with no resistance.
Another problem in the United midfield is injury problems. Despite van Gaal rotating the four central midfielders in nearly every game, Michael Carrick, Schweinsteiger and Herrera have all spent time out from injuries.
If signed by the Red Devils, Jorginho would provide decent back up to Schneiderlin, if the Frenchman was ever injured for a big game.
Given the injury issues, and the potential departure of Herrera to Barcelona, looking into getting more midfielders like Jorginho or Tielemans will key to Manchester United sustaining a title challenge.
