Manchester United’s performances, and results, have drastically improved since signing 19 year old Anthony Martial. The Frenchman has scored 4 goals, and claimed an assist, in his first five appearances as a Red Devil.
Martial’s flair and natural striking ability has been instrumental in improving the entire team, taking the pressure off of other players who were being relied upon for goals, in the absence of a true striker.
But, manager Louis van Gaal remains sceptical as he knows that consistency is key to success, as he sites United’s record signing, Ángel Di María.
The Dutch coach says:
“In the beginning, for example, Di María has a lot of assists and a lot of goals so we have to wait and see if Martial is consistent.”
There is however a fundamental difference between Ángel Di María’s Manchester United career, and Anthony Martial’s.
Di María’s favoured position was on the left wing but, after sustaining a short injury, he was played in the centre of midfield. This lead to a decrease in his production and showed his inability to perform to his usual world class standards.
With Martial, it’s very unlikely that he will be played out of position as he is the Manchester United first team’s only striker.
Consistency will still be key to Anthony Martial’s progress and success.
