Manchester United face Southampton this Sunday afternoon with a 4pm BST kick-off from St Mary’s – A fixture in which Louis van Gaal will be looking for all three-points, trying to continue the good form from last Saturday’s 3-1 victory over Liverpool at Old Trafford.
Despite conceding three goals in his first two United starts, David De Gea should retain his place between the posts.
The Blind – Smalling centre back pairing has been very successful this season but the injury to Luke Shaw potentially the partnership in jeopardy. Against PSV, Rojo came on at centre back, pushing Blind out left and that could happen against Southampton.
However, the Argentinean peaked Louis van Gaal’s interests during the World Cup, where he played every game as a left back, and did it very well. As Rojo lacks match sharpness, it might better to play him at full back as there’s a less of a direct threat on goal in the wide positions.
Wayne Rooney is fit to play, having only been kept out of the last two games as a precaution, and is expected to pair up with the newest Red Devil, Anthony Martial. With Rooney backing up Martial, both will be in their optimum scoring positions.
Morgan Schneiderlin hasn’t started the last 2 games for Manchester United but will be very eager to be in van Gaal’s line up against his old club. His particular skill set will be necessary to help fend off the attacking talent of Dušan Tadić.
Juan Mata and Memphis Depay have dominated United’s wings but, Ashley Young has made a case I the last two games to take either players spot. Van Gaal will most likely stick with the Dutchman and the Spaniard though.
The second central midfield spot is hotly contested between Bastian Schweinsteiger, Michael Carrick and Ander Herrera and all have played very well during their pitch time.
The Spaniard should be able to bring great balance to the midfield, with Schneiderlin being very defensive and Herrera loving to push forward.
