Martial’s First French Cap

Anthony Martial started on the French bench in the friendly match up against Portugal yesterday.

The youngster was subbed on for Karim Benzema in the 74th minute. During his time on the field fellow substitute Mathieu Valbuena scored to give France a 1-0 win.

France’s manager, Didier Deschamps, has said that he included Martial in his squad because there was no one else with his skill set.

“I selected him because he has the skills, speed and power I could not find anywhere else. I’m looking for players like that; now let’s see how he adapts to the squad.”

Just 3 days after his transfer to Manchester United, Martial has began his international career.

France do not need to qualify for the 2016 Euros, as they’re hosting, so are playing friendly matches in each international break.

Their next friendly is at home against Serbia on Monday.
