With the World Cup fast approaching, many players will be doing their utmost to be in amongst Roy Hodgson’s final plans, and this will be no different for the English contingent of the current Manchester United squad. Having had five players named in the squad for the friendly against Denmark (Wayne Rooney, Michael Carrick, Chris Smalling, Danny Welbeck and Tom Cleverley), the Red Devils’ representation was not minimal.
Despite the poor domestic campaign, these United players will be keen to impress the England selectors in order to gain a seat on the plane to Brazil. Many have been critical of United boss David Moyes and his tactics, however, one thing he has done is stick by his English players and utilise them each week. This has given them constant opportunity to shine, but with just 8 games remaining it is the final run in before Hodgson names his squad.
In the past Manchester United players have been the backbone to England Squads. The days of Gary and Phil Neville, David Beckham, Paul Scholes, Rio Ferdinand and of course Wayne Rooney and Michael Carrick who are still very much involved. This summer could yet prove to be no different, with the five named in the previous squad and likes of Phil Jones, the Red Devils could submit a strong list of candidates. It is almost certain that Wayne Rooney and Danny Welbeck will be included depending on fitness, however, it is the other names that are looking to make an impact.
Michael Carrick
Over the years Michael Carrick has gone under the radar in terms of his footballing ability playing alongside the legendary Paul Scholes, however, this season he has been at the forefront of any positivity to boast about at Old Trafford. Currently in his eighth season with United, the tireless yet calm midfielder could be key this summer, where preserving energy could be essential. Websites offering World Cup Betting tips are showing Carrick at 4/7 to be on the plane to Brazil. The United star is known for his calm style of play and his ability to play the right ball at the right time. His experience in the centre of midfield could prove to be something of a weapon for Hodgson and his plans
Phil Jones
At just 22 years old, he is often compared to the great United and England legend Duncan Edwards and with 9 caps already to his name; Phil Jones has had quite the taste of international football. This season especially, in what has been declared a transitional period for the club, Jones has been labelled a key member of the squad and in particular a captain for the future. This summer in Brazil, the United defender could be a useful addition, not only for his solid defensive play, but also for his threat in the opposition box.
Tom Cleverley
Tom Cleverley is often a player that gets heavily criticised for his lack lustre performances; however, the midfielder is a useful player to have in amongst a squad. At the start of the season he was ever present in David Moyes’ side. His best attribute is how he keeps the ball and his possession play and when winning a game, this is key. Also, Cleverley has a tendency to create forward thinking chances by picking the key pass.
