Manchester United manager David Moyes goes on personal scouting trip

Less than 24 hours after watching his team defeat Swansea City 2-0 in the Premier League, United manager David Moyes was spotted in Sardinia to take in a Serie A match between Cagliari and runaway leaders Juventus.

With the defending champions linked with every player under the sun it’s difficult to put a finger on who Moyes was watching but we can probably narrow it down to a number of candidates.

The least likely option is that Moyes was watching ex-United player Paul Pogba. The Express ran a story that Moyes would like to bring the midfielder back to the club in the summer but people in Italy feel PSG would be a more likely destination should the France international decide to leave The Old Lady.

His midfield team mates might be more suitable to Moyes though. Arturo Vidal has been a key man for the Turin side this season and it appears the United boss is a big fan but would have to part with serious money to tempt the Chilean international away from Juventus.

Out of three midfielders Claudio Marchisio seems to be the likeliest for a January move. Appearances have been sporadic and mainly off the bench but he scored a long-range effort on Sunday just minutes after coming off the bench to give his side the lead and BT Sport seem to think Marchisio was the man Moyes had his eye on.

The final option would be Cagliari defender Davide Astori, heavily linked with a move to the Premier League for sometime but he didn’t have his best day in front of the on-looking United manager. Despite concerns of the midfield, Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic could both leave the club in the summer and no doubt United will be looking to reinforce that area as much as everywhere else.

As well as scouting Italy, first team coach Phil Neville was spotted in Spain this morning at the Getafe vs Rayo Vallecano match. United scouts have been spotted at several Rayo games lately and it’s believed Neville was there to watch midfielder Saul Niguez who is also being tracked by Chelsea and Arsenal.

The teenage midfielder, on loan from Atletico Madrid, appears to have a bright future and is capped for the Spain U21 side but it remains to be seen whether his long-term future remains at Atletico.

United also had scouts at the Benfica vs Porto match tonight where centre-back target Ezequiel Garay scored the final goal to seal victory for Benfica. Scouts from many other leading clubs were there too as the likes of Jackson Martinez, Elaquim Mangala, Nemanja Matic and Fernando continue to be linked with moves to the Premier League.
